A Note on My Approach

My ethos is centered around creating space for couples and families to enjoy their time together, without feeling that a camera is intruding. You can expect a more candid documentary portrait session without the pressure to perform perfectly for a photographer. Past clients have described their portrait experience as “a unique + artistic approach to photography”.

However, being photographed can feel a bit awkward at first and I often begin sessions with subtle direction to help everyone feel a bit more at ease.

My version of posing may consist of have a couple to take a breath and go on a short walk together at the water’s edge, asking young children to collect seashells for parents, or having a mother comfort shy little ones in an embrace. A favorite line from a past couple is “if it feels good, do it”. My goal is always to photograph without intrusion and to create space for my clients to be themselves.

About
Jillian Adams | Jillian Adams Photography

Jillian Adams

Jillian Adams is an anthropologist turned photographer, telling the stories of the wedding ritual between couples & families along the east coast. With a decade of experience and an educational background in anthropology & human rights, Jillian offers a uniquely mindful approach to wedding photography. Photographing the realm of life & love between the veil. For sincerity, soul, and human ritual.

I’m excited to once again offer portraiture from Pensacola to 30a, having recently moved back home to the coast to settle down in Santa Rosa Beach.

My last five years were spent living in East Tennessee + Birmingham, AL, learning the inner workings of hospitality & events alongside wedding photography. Over these years, my work has brought me many destinations from the Appalachians to Washington D.C. and Brooklyn, NY.

I’m looking forward to photographing families + couples making their own memories on the beaches that made me fall in love with photography over a decade ago.

FAQs

  • Film is my primary medium. I shoot a mixture of 35mm, medium format and digital.

  • I deliver a mixture of both black and white and color photographs. I personally love black and white photos, but I do my best to deliver the color versions for each photograph, unless it was taken with black and white film specifically.

  • Yes; during your session, I’ll snap a few posed traditional portraits. While I love candids, I believe the traditional portrait is also important to have for the archives.

  • It’s always awkward at first for anyone getting in front of the camera. I’ll lead people into good light and offer low pressure, non performative prompts. I love when we’re able to find something that isn’t photo specific to do at sessions, such as families building sandcastles or couples preparing dinner together at their vacation home.

  • Yes! The best way to take the pressure off having photos taken is to have something to do during your session. Ideas might be an outing on the boat, a night around the bonfire, preparing a meal with family, a quick surf, riding around town in the Jeep, walking the dog, going fishing, etc.

  • You will receive your online gallery within 4-6 weeks of your session. Film is a slower process than digital and takes a bit longer to be processed and developed.

I do not use AI in my business, which means your gallery is edited carefully by hand.

  • Due to the amount of film I shoot and developing time, I am not able to deliver sneak peeks.

  • Unlike many other 30a photography companies, I am the only photographer in my business. I guarantee that I will be the one photographing your session.

If I receive an inquiry for a date I’m not available, I will refer one of my peers.

  • Florida weather can be unpredictable and while I have a lifetime of experience dealing with Florida’s storms, I cannot claim to predict or control the weather (but I wish I could!).

If it appears that it will be unsafe or unfavorable weather conditions the evening of your session, we can discuss rescheduling within your vacation schedule, moving things indoors at your vacation house, or providing a refund if we cannot have the session.
